The Finnish company HMD Global mostly produced its Nokia phones in China through contract manufacturers, but now the company is moving production to Europe as well. The case was announced in connection with the MWC trade fair in Barcelona.

In the first phase, HMD Global says it will develop capabilities and processes that will bring the production of 5G-equipped Nokia devices to Europe in 2023. The decision is said to be a continuation of HMD Global's commitment to ensure a safe and transparent operation in Europe.

"We are excited to announce the first step towards bringing 5G smartphone manufacturing to Europe," said Jean-Francois Baril, Founder, President and CEO of HMD Global. "The Nokia brand has a long history in the European market and with this move we further strengthen our position as the only major European smartphone supplier."

However, HMD Global declined to confirm the country where the phones are manufactured. In the case, they referred to the data protection offered by the devices promised by HMD Global. The phone is manufactured through a contractual partner, who assembles the devices from parts delivered from China. HMD Global does not intend to abandon the current Chinese production, but the European production will expand the company's production capacity.
