The HMD Fusion modular smartphone was expected to have a successor, but a new report suggests that it may never happen. It seems that HMD is discontinuing the Fusion line, which means that development on the Fusion 2 has come to a halt. Regardless of the shutdown, HMD is keeping its promise and will provide 3 years of updates for consumers for the devices currently on the market, and 5 years of updates for the Business Edition.
In 2024, the HMD Fusion was launched as a modular smartphone with interchangeable back covers called Fusion Outfits. These Fusion Outfits add various features to the phone, such as a game controller, camera light ring, wireless charging, and better protection. While a successor seems to be on the way, an unconfirmed report suggests that this may never happen.
The information comes from the popular X account HMD_Meme (@smashx_60), which posts news about HMD and Nokia-branded devices. A recent post suggests that HMD may be scrapping the Fusion project. The post cites high manufacturing costs and profitability as the reasons, but adds a statement that the news has not yet been confirmed. Support for the existing model will reportedly continue as promised.
This news comes as a surprise, as the last we heard about the HMD Fusion was that a successor was in the works. This successor, which was expected to be unveiled as the HMD Fusion 2, featured key improvements such as a 120Hz FHD+ display, a more powerful Snapdragon processor, an updated dual rear camera, and higher intrusion protection.
It was also reported that the HMD Fusion 2 will get a new generation of Fusion Outfits that include a projector, speaker, and camera grip, all of which are exciting and reminiscent of the Moto Mods from the Moto Z series. Now, it seems that these accessories and the phone itself may never be released.
We don't know the BOM of the HMD Fusion (currently available on Amazon for $262.54), but considering that RAM and storage have become more expensive, the higher manufacturing cost is definitely a legitimate reason. Also, the smartphone market is very competitive, and while modular smartphones are attractive, if they don't sell well, it's worth focusing on more profitable models.
