You get a pink battery, pink charging cable and a litany of shiny accessories - It's a year late, but the Barbie Phone is finally here. It's not a smartphone, but a clamshell-style phone that's all pink and emblazoned with the Mattel Barbie logo. The handset has a shiny mirror on the front and lots of accessories like charms and gem stickers to trick it out, so you can fully bask in late 1990s and early 2000s nostalgia. It even blurts out "Hi Barbie" when you turn it on.

This is a true collaboration between Mattel and HMD, which previously produced Nokia-branded smartphones. This is part of HMD's push to make its own smartphones along with feature phones developed in collaboration with well-known companies. This includes Boring Phone from earlier this year, which was born out of a strange relationship with Heineken.

The Barbie Phone runs KaiOS, an operating system designed for feature phones that adds some smartphone capabilities, such as 4G connectivity, Wi-Fi, GPS, and access to apps like WhatsApp , Google Maps and YouTube. You'll still feel like you're using the Symbian operating system of old Nokia phones, just with modern conveniences.

By default, HMD's new flip phone can make calls and send SMS. The company is on a bit of a crusade to reduce screen time and distractions, so the idea is to use this phone as a second phone if you don't want to be pinged while you're kicking the Kens on the beach.

HMD is hardly the first to build a product around the concept of unplugging from the always-on life. There have been a few like-minded phones over the years, such as the Light Phone or the redesigned Palm from 2018. App timers and other screen-time-reducing features built into Android, iOS, and even Nokia-branded HMD feature phones such as the Nokia 3310 are of a similar mindset.

Nokia has exited the Russian market due to the Russian embargo

The outside of the Barbie Phone cover has a reflective surface that doubles as a mirror (remember the LG Shine?) and a hidden digital clock in the middle. Flip it out and you get a nice 2.8-inch display. The built-in backlit keyboard lets you type, and there are a bunch of little Barbie-themed touches here and there, like the palm tree icon around the number 7. And by my count, six Barbie logos - be it the full text or just the letter B.

It's powered by Qualcomm's 215 chipset, has 512 megabytes of RAM and 4 gigabytes of storage, supporting microSD cards up to 32 gigabytes in size. Yes, you can use it as an MP3 player and groove to "I'm Just Ken" via Bluetooth or the 3.5mm headphone jack. HMD claims the 1,430mAh battery - also pink - offers roughly 3.8 hours of talk time on 4G (6.3 hours on 3G), but it's hard to say what that means for regular use. It charges via USB-C with, you guessed it, a pink charging cable.

The unboxing experience should be like unboxing a Barbie. It's not just the phone, but two spare backs that you can swap out in different styles. There are stickers and adhesive gems that stun these phone cases, along with a string of beads and some charms that hang from the device. Cute. Even the microfiber cleaning cloth is pink.

The OS is of course Barbie-themed, complete with Barbie wallpapers and a Malibu Snake version of the iconic Snake game. HMD is currently working on a "Detox Mode" for its smartphones, which allows

gives you finer control to disable apps and notifications at certain times of the day or night. While the Barbie Phone doesn't get that, there is an app that offers tips for "digital balance."

It has a 5-megapixel camera that HMD positions to "capture authentic Y2K-style images, which is the latest trend among GenZers." I almost threw up.

The Barbie Phone goes on sale October 1st for $129 and will work on AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon. Pre-orders start on September 23rd, so you'll have some time to decide whether you want the new iPhone 16 or this all-pink dumb phone. Probably both.
