HMD 106 Pure Now Available in Pakistan – A 2G Phone with a Removable Battery

HMD has quietly launched its latest keypad phone without any fanfare. The HMD 106 Pure has appeared in a Pakistani online store, even though HMD has not yet made an official announcement; the phone is not listed on HMD's official website. However, the retailer is offering it for 3,250 PKR (GBP 8, EUR 10, USD 11, or INR 1,128) - just over 11 dollars.
In terms of design, the 106 Pure strongly resembles the earlier HMD 101, but the internal hardware differs: it is powered by the Unisoc 6531E chip. Crucially, it supports only basic GSM/2G connectivity, meaning it won't be of much use in regions where 2G networks have already been - or are soon to be - shut down.
While the specifications won't keep anyone occupied for long, the essential "retro extras" are present: a 3.5mm headphone jack, built-in FM radio, and microSD expansion (up to 32 GB). These days, it is actually easier to find these features in a "throwback" phone like this than in some more expensive smartphones.
The display features QQVGA resolution, which translates to 120 × 160 pixels. The system runs on the S30+ platform typical of HMD’s feature phones, and the battery has a capacity of 1000 mAh. According to the specifications, there is no camera (while some models using a similar platform might count a 320 × 240 module as a "camera," this one lacks even that).
All in all, the HMD 106 Pure delivers exactly what its name suggests: the simplest possible phone with basic functions at a very low price. However, anyone in Hungary considering such a device should keep in mind the risks associated with 2G connectivity, as the network environment determines the viability of this type of "calls-only" mobile phone.
