The main goal is digitization, process automation and the reduction of rail freight costs. Adif Alta Velocidad (Adif AV) has awarded both companies a €20.5 million contract to be implemented within 62 months to boost digitization and, at the same time, automate processes and reduce rail freight costs by building out the network to support 5G coverage in ten strategic areas.
Madrid, January 19, 2023. Cellnex, a joint venture established by its subsidiary Tradia and Nokia, has been awarded the contract to build a private 5G network and a public 5G network at the Adif Logistics Centers. The deployment of the 5G network in the railway infrastructure enables sustainable mobility by helping to connect the main transport hubs of the railway system. This will revitalize rail transport, especially freight, generating potential growth in this mode of transport and facilitating the ecological transition to more sustainable transport.
The implementation of this infrastructure guarantees advanced connectivity services in high-density environments, as well as the introduction of various 5G technology applications, which, among other things, enable the use of Internet of Things (IoT) networks, which are essential for monitoring critical devices.
The proposed solution consists of two independent radio networks: a private 5G radio network for Adif's own service - in the 2300 MHz band throughout the terminal area - and another public 5G network for operator services based on the sharing of radio access elements. , which installs umbrella coverage for the entire end station in the 700 MHz band, and in high-traffic areas in the 3500 MHz band. The contract stipulates that this infrastructure must be made available to telecommunications providers so that they can provide their services in areas where the deployment would not currently be economically viable.
The contract awarded to the joint venture includes the development of the construction project, delivery, works and installation, maintenance and operation of the network infrastructure in ten logistics terminals: Vicálvaro and Villaverde (Madrid); Zaragoza Plaza; Barcelona Can Tunis and Barcelona La Llagosta; Valencia Fuente San Luis; Seville Majarabique; Vitoria Jundiz; Bilbao; and Valladolid.
