F innish company Bittium has introduced the new Bittium Tough Mobile 3 smartphone, designed specifically for the demanding information security needs of governments, defense, authorities and critical infrastructure organizations. The novelty continues the company's line of secure phones and brings quantum-secure mobile communications.

Tough Mobile 3 is based on the Android operating system and supports 5G connections. The phone combines military-grade durability with state-level security, while providing users with ease of use and readiness for integration with existing IT systems. The phone is compatible with Bittium's SafeMove and Secure Call software solutions and is aiming to receive EU and NATO security certification.

As a special solution, the device features dual operating systems, Bittium Secure OS for confidential use and a hardened Android system for personal needs. You can switch between them with the dual boot function, eliminating the need for two separate devices.

Bittium Tough Mobile 3 is based on Bittium's secure software technology, which offers its users a comprehensive information security communication solution, responding to the ever-increasing security and performance requirements of mobile communications. The new Tough Mobile 3 uses a hardware platform for which Bittium Corporation’s subsidiary Bittium Wireless Oy has today entered into a collaboration agreement with HMD’s Finnish subsidiary HMD Secure Oy. HMD Secure will jointly manufacture a device platform for Bittium at its European factory, which Bittium will then productize and software-enhance into the Bittium Tough Mobile 3 end-user product.

Bittium will acquire a high-security phone platform from HMD Secure that integrates Bittium’s software technology. The phone’s maximum security is achieved by adding Bittium’s quantum-secure information security technology and software applications to the device platform, making it a unique communications solution to address the growing information security threats facing governments, defense forces, authorities and critical infrastructure. Shipments of the phones will begin in 2026.

I am very proud of our decision to partner with HMD Secure to expand our Bittium Tough Mobile product line with a new 5G phone. Bittium has a long history of designing secure software and devices, which has enabled Bittium Tough Mobile to be one of the most secure phones in the world. The increasing number of cyberattacks and the high computing power enabled by quantum computers have increased the need to develop even stronger, quantum-safe mobile security, which is our strategy to continue to focus on in the future. HMD Secure's information security-designed platform and Bittium's information security software make Bittium Tough Mobile 3 the most secure phone on the market," said Petri Toljamo, CEO of Bittium Corporation."

The Bittium Tough Mobile 3 features two fully differentiated, hardened operating systems: Bittium Secure OS for confidential professional use and a hardened Android operating system for personal use. Users can switch between operating environments with the device’s dual boot feature, allowing for complete separation of personal and professional use.

"In-device information security plays a major role in ensuring absolute security of mobile communications. It is of utmost importance for both Bittium and our customers that the design, manufacturing and supply chain of the device are reliable. We have entered into a strategic partnership with HMD Secure, and our deep technological collaboration has enabled the new device to meet the highest security requirements of our customers. Together, we ensure that third parties cannot influence the security of the device," said Tommi Kangas, Executive Vice President of the Defense & Security Business segment at Bittium."

The Tough Mobile 3 features a number of features to prevent attacks on the device and software, including tamper detection, security checks at startup and during use, and a chip to perform security-critical functions. The Privacy Mode feature quickly blocks sensors, cameras, microphones, and Bluetooth connections.

The Tough Mobile 3 is complemented by Bittium SafeMove Mobile VPN and Bittium Secure Call software solutions, which enable quantum-secure mobile communications in NATO, EU and nationally certified environments. The software solutions are designed for government and government agencies to protect security-classified mobile communications from the moment the device is powered on without interruption.

"At HMD Secure, we believe that sovereignty and resilience come from trusted collaboration. Working with Bittium – an established and leading provider of secure communication solutions – has helped us design and deliver one of the few 5G devices developed and manufactured in Europe. Together, we will build solutions that combine uncompromising security, traceable supply chains and true mission-critical performance for governments, defense and first responders,” comments Jean-François Baril, Chairman of the Board of Directors of HMD."

The collaboration between Bittium and HMD includes a license agreement under which HMD Secure licenses certain Bittium security features. HMD Secure may also sell and resell its device platform to other customers, and may also sell Bittium’s secure firmware as part of its device sales. Bittium will receive licensing revenue from these secure firmwares, which HMD Secure will sell as part of its device sales. The collaboration does not include any exclusive rights for either party to the other party’s technology.
