Flip phones are loved because they offer a solution to digital detox in a world where almost four in ten (38%) 16-24 year olds are worried about spending too much time on their smartphones 1 . In the US alone, a third of Gen Z are actively trying to limit their time on social media, and the fear of missing out (FOMO) is creeping downward.

Generation Z is the only generation whose daily time spent on social media has decreased in a positive direction since the first quarter of 2021. Since 2021, the number of online conversations with friends has decreased by 13%, while the proportion of face-to-face meetings has increased to 28%

Feature phones are on the rise as Gen Z and millennials choose to limit screen time for their own mental health. The self-proclaimed "screenagers" took to TikTok with #bringbackflipphones, which has reached 60.2 million views

But this is not just a generational change, but a cultural movement. The big switch-off trend launched in 2021 is gaining momentum as people of all ages strive for balance in an increasingly digital world. Feature phones are making a comeback, HMD reports, with Flip Phone sales alone more than doubling in Europe (from 2022-2023) and expected to grow further in 2024.

Even celebrities are jumping on board, with Michael Cera embracing the flip phone lifestyle.

Arne Mathiasen, an advocate for the telephone movement, works with young people in Denmark to help them switch off and enjoy the present. So far, more than 1,500 university students have been converted from smartphones to telephone devices. He said:

My students participate in experiments where they switch to a feature phone for ten days. The students chatted noticeably more with each other, reported better sleep, and reported less anxiety. It's all about balance; I like to tell my students, use your smartphone like a tablet, use it for what you need, then put it away, don't lose it.
