B ritish incumbent telecoms operator BT claims it has achieved a European first in its 5G stand-alone live network trial by consolidating four service components.

Together with the Finnish manufacturer Nokia, the operator combined four low and middle bands (2.1, 2.6, 3.4, 3.6 GHz) into one connection, allowing to increase the data transfer rate per user. Claiming to be the first time this has been achieved in Europe using commercial spectrum, and the first outside a European laboratory, the two-stage trial began at BT's radio laboratory in Bristol and was then moved outdoors on a radio mast. at BT Adastral Park in Suffolk. Here the operator achieved 4CC on 5G SA broadcast in EE's standard radio spectrum.

The press release does not provide more technical details, nor about the peak user rates achieved, but instead boasts about the significant progress achieved in the development of the 5G infrastructure.

"The trial with Nokia is another demonstration that we are building the most advanced network for our customers." said Greg McCall, managing director of BT Service Platforms.

"5G Standalone combined with edge computing opens up new opportunities for customers looking to develop new services. In addition, this technology demonstrates what is possible for devices in the future to support carrier aggregation, which is an important part of the customer experience.”

The announcement continues with an exchange of ideas between operator and carrier, as Nokia's Mark Atkinson says: “Once again, we are delighted to be deepening our partnership with BT and supporting them with our industry-leading Carrier Aggregation technology in this trial. Nokia and BT have a long history of investing in cutting edge technology and this trial is another example of what our companies can achieve together."
