Verizon has teamed up with Microsoft Corp. and Nokia to help its business customers build faster and more secure applications across 5G private networks globally. Private 5G networks enable businesses to increase energy efficiency and reduce the cost of end-user equipment while contributing to privacy and security needs.

As part of Microsoft’s collaboration, Verizon is integrating technology giant’s cloud software, Azure, into its on-premises 5G edge network for ultra-low latency, “many times faster than in the blink of an eye” and capable of helping businesses real-time data analysis and delivery. On-site private 5G networks enable businesses to increase energy efficiency and reduce the cost of end-user equipment while contributing to privacy and security needs.

In addition, Verizon is using Nokia Digital Automation Cloud, a private wireless networking solution that allows businesses in Europe and Asia-Pacific to deploy applications through a web-based interface.

A private 5G network is a stand-alone network whose components are all housed in a single facility, consisting of microtowers and small cells, and connected to an organization’s local area network (LAN) and enterprise applications. Verizon targets customers with manufacturing, distribution, and logistics facilities who need to deploy a customized on-premises mobile network and not have to transmit data over public networks over a private 5G network.

“If anything has been taught to us in recent months, it has never been a more critical time for mobility, broadband and cloud-based products and services,” said Tami Erwin, CEO of Verizon. "5G private networks are a transformative technology that will usher in a new era of disruption and innovation for businesses around the world."

Verizon has revealed that Ice Mobility, a logistics and supply chain solutions company, is the first client to already test its on-premises 5G Edge platform, integrating with Microsoft (MSFT) Azure. By collecting near real-time data on product packaging defects, the company is able to improve on-site quality assurance and save 15-30% on processing time...read more
