Sam Chin has been largely involved in the life history of the Nokia brand, but FIH has other plans. Sam Chin has more than 30 years of marketing, sales and operational experience in the global computer and electronics industry. From 2003 to 2012, Sam was President and CEO of Foxconn International Holdings, a subsidiary of Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. Ltd., a multinational electronics contract manufacturer.

At the time, Sam was one of the executives in Foxconn’s handset manufacturing services business. Sam resigned as CEO in January 2012, remaining president for another 12 months. Prior to joining FIH, Sam held senior management positions at consumer electronics company EFA Corporation, as well as gaming company Atari and home computer and electronics giant Commodore Electronics.

His responsibilities ranged from sales and marketing, from global sourcing and manufacturing to pricing, sourcing, contracting negotiations, and accounting and finance issues. Sam graduated in economics in 1973 with a degree in economics from Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, and three years later with a Ph.D. in Juris from the University of Pennsylvania School of Law.

BB’s announced return to the smartphone has removed Sam Chin from HMD Global’s board of directors thanks to mobile forwarding company OnwardMobility and FIH. The number of board meetings has also changed and there are now only four seats for Florian Seiche, Jean-Francois Baril, Ivan Yeh and Nokia Barry French. Sam continues to work with HMD Global as many of Nokia’s phones are manufactured in FIH plants acquired by Nokia and Microsoft. So Sam remains a valuable partner for HMD Global, but roads are slowly separating, which is probably good for both FIH and Nokia Mobile.
