Espoo, Finland - Nokia announced today that it will support Telefónica in its effort to deploy 5G services to 75 percent of the Spanish population by the end of the year. This move means that Nokia will continue its long-term partnership with Telefónica as the only supplier to deliver 5G radio technology to all of its 5G operations in Europe.

Nokia has been supporting Telefónica’s 5G development strategy since 2018 as part of the “Technology Cities” project in the historic city of Segovia in central Spain. The project tested the capabilities of 5G in different cases used in urban areas to help local citizens and businesses understand the benefits of the new 5G-based digital services. In particular, the project examined the benefits of higher capacity and lower latency data rates.

Nokia is currently delivering its flexible AirScale Radio Access portfolio, which provides extremely fast data rates, connectivity and extremely low latency, and gives Telefónica the flexibility to meet growing demands. Nokia also provides expertise in deployment and support services. In addition, Nokia supports the development of Telefónica’s network for the hyper-switched 5G era in various areas, including IP networking, optical transport and optical fibers.

Joaquín Mata, CTIO, Telefónica of Spain, said: “We are delighted to be working with Nokia on our nationwide 5G deployment in both urban and rural regions of Spain. We anticipate that the 5G gaming modifier will impact both the consumer and business segments, and Nokia’s state-of-the-art 5G devices will help us deliver the best-in-class experience to our customers. "

Tommi Uitto, President of Mobile Networks, Nokia stated: “We look forward to extending our long-term relationship with Telefónica to the 5G era and offering a number of compelling new services in Spain. We help Telefónica implement its strategy and deliver a compelling and transformative experience using Nokia’s business and consumer 5G solutions. "
