A quarter of a century ago, the Finnish telecommunications Nokia Nokia began operations in India. In July 1995, then-EU telecoms minister Sukh Ram made the first wireless call using a handheld mobile phone to Jyoti Basu, the prime minister of West Bengal. The phone call was exchanged via Mutt Telstra’s MobileNet service between the Kolkata Writing Building and Sanchar Bhawan in New Delhi.

The two buildings are approx. It is 159 km apart so this was a huge achievement for the Indian government and pioneering telecommunications in that old time. However, for many unknown, this call is a great achievement of the Nokia brand, it is also the leading mobile phone manufacturer.

Although it is not known exactly which phone model was used, it was confirmed that two Nokia phones were used to make the historic call. Some say it could be the security-focused Nokia 2080, but it could also be the mainstream Nokia 350 or the robust Nokia 880.

Although we can’t tell which Nokia phone was used, it’s still a very proud moment for the company. This call not only changed the Indian phone number forever, but also forever strengthened the company’s reputation for what may have previously been their largest markets.

The current Nokia Mobile still has a long way to go to redeem the same reputation, but we hope to have a better long-term plan for one of the world’s largest consumer markets.
