Espoo, Finland - Nokia has installed EdenNet Self-Organization Network (SON) software for Telstra to help the Australian service provider centralize and automate network operations and support the transition to 5G.

Nokia's EdenNet SON solution automates Telstra's radio access network (RAN) configuration management, improving network performance and efficiency to support 5G's growing needs. The partnership with Nokia will allow Telstra to migrate legacy devices to an open, scalable and future-proof platform and enhance automation. Under the agreement, Telstra will implement the Nokia SON solution at its multiple vendor, nationwide 3G, 4G and 5G RAN. The model, transition and production environments will be delivered.

Nokia EdenNet SON is an open platform based on 3GPP standards that allows mobile operators to efficiently exploit the full potential of existing networks as well as convert to 5G. As a centralized solution, the cognitive EdenNet SON platform eliminates complexities between multiple vendors, multiple technologies, and multilayer networks.

Nokia EdenNet SON has helped more than 100 communications providers worldwide increase the reliability of their radio network while improving efficiency.

Ashley Hunter, Managing Director of Telstra Network Engineering, said: “Telstra is a global leader in introducing new radio and platform technologies, and Nokia’s EdenNet SON solution enables automation of network configuration and operations to improve cycle time, repeatability, reliability and cost. The Nokia Open SON Framework APIs hide the complexity of the underlying network, allowing Telstra to focus on automating the configuration of our network to provide greater reliability, faster speed and peace of mind for our customers.

Vishal Singh, Vice President of Nokia Software, said: “Once Telstra laid the groundwork for its 5G deployment, it sought an opportunity to improve its network performance with new RAN technologies and software releases. Nokia was the clear partner thanks to EdenNet SON, which allows Telstra engineers to customize and automate network configurations in a cost-effective and timely manner."
