According to The Hindu Businessline report, Jean Francois Baril, Founder and CEO of HMD Global, gave a virtual speech at the inaugural meeting of the 19th edition of Connect 2020, organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry with the government of Tamil Nadu, and the Indian government, STPI - Hosted by the Ministry of Electronics and Informatics, the report said.

HMD Global, licensed to manufacture and sell Nokia-branded phones, plans to increase production and sourcing from India to meet global demand.

Mr Baril’s curiosity, or he reiterated, is that HMD Global is serious about making India the export center for Nokia smartphones. Nokia Mobile already manufactures and assembles for the local market, but not for export. “In the context of the very rapidly emerging geopolitical crisis between West and East, our motto is to create, acquire, produce and later export from India, and this is currently a very serious debate for the company,” said Jean Francois Baril, CEO of HMD Global.

“We are already producing everything we sell in India, but sourcing will not yet revive according to a global proposal,” Baril added.

He also said the company’s vision fits well with India’s ambition to become a five hundred million dollar economy and the country’s export-oriented approach once it has met its self-sufficiency goals.

“So it is extremely important to balance the work and support India in becoming the next generation of high technology in this cluster,” Baril said. The Finnish handset maker recently raised $ 230 million from investors such as Nokia Technologies, Google and Qualcomm.

CoR Udhayakumar, Tamil Nadu’s Minister of Revenue, Disaster Management and IT, said in a keynote address that the state government is actively supporting the IT sector with the aim of making the state the information and communication technology (ICT) hub of South Asia.

“IT & special exports grew from 12 per cent to 1.39 per hundred thousand crore in 2019-20, compared to 1.23 per hundred thousand crore in the previous year,” Udhayakumar said, adding, “Employment in the sector grew by nearly 12 per cent to 7.4 lakh In 2019-20."

The Minister added that the government is actively working with industry to strengthen and develop the IT sector throughout the state, especially in Cities 2 and...read more
