N okia has announced that it will use Vodafone Idea’s (Vi) DWDM solution in the access layer to upgrade its network to 5G to meet future service capacity and reliability needs.

The new, compact and scalable DWDM solution will allow Vi to optimize its fiber resources while providing 100 G of capacity and expanding the network’s future upgrade capacity to 200 G and beyond in the access network.

With the Nokia 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS), the Vi can increase network capacity cost-effectively and sustainably by minimizing operating costs with reduced power consumption and carbon footprint. Nokia's solution supports Vi to reduce total cost of ownership (TCO) and improve return on investment (ROI) while improving network capacity to meet future needs.

Jagbir Singh, Chief Technology Officer of Vodafone Idea, said: "We are building best-in-class digital networks to meet the changing demands of the market. "Working with Nokia allows us to use the latest technology to modernize our networks and provide the best possible quality for our subscribers."

Prashant Ramesh Malkani, head of Nokia’s Vodafone Idea CBT division, said: “Our field-proven 1830 PSS solution enables Vodafone Idea to meet the growing capacity needs and deliver the best-in-class network experience to its subscribers while preparing networks for the 5G era. We look forward to working with Vodafone Idea on this key implementation of Access DWDM and supporting them in realizing their 5G vision to provide an exceptional experience for their subscribers."
