V odafone Idea is taking a major step forward by deploying its 5G network in 23 more Indian cities. This expansion includes key cities like Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Pune and Trivandrum. The move builds on previous launches in Mumbai and Delhi, which aim to improve digital connectivity across the country.
The rollout will be strategic and phased, leveraging AI-driven self-organizing networks (SONs) to manage the network infrastructure. This approach optimizes network performance, reduces deployment costs and increases efficiency. By partnering with Nokia, Ericsson and Samsung, the company is delivering robust and reliable network coverage.
In addition to advancing its 5G efforts, Vodafone Idea will continue to support its 4G network. This dual approach has increased the overall capacity and speed of the 4G network, expanding its coverage to 84% of India’s population from 77% the previous year. The increased 4G capacity complements the rollout of 5G and offers better service continuity.
Chief Technology Officer Jagbir Singh highlighted the strategic value of deploying 5G behind competitors such as Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio. The delayed rollout has allowed Vodafone Idea to adopt newer technologies such as Disaggregated Radio Access Network (RAN) systems, increasing operational efficiency and reducing costs.
An interesting development is the growing stake of the Indian government in the company, which now stands at 48.99% following a recent share allotment worth INR 369.5 billion (approximately $4.3 billion). This follows a government order that made existing spectrum auction fees fairer.
The financial backing strengthens Vodafone Idea’s position in the competitive telecom landscape. The operator has signed network equipment deals worth $3.6 billion with its partners over the next three years.
