The smartphone that runs Windows, Linux and Android is coming

The American Nex Computer has come up with a special mobile: the device called NexPhone can be converted into a desktop computer, and in addition to Android, Windows and Linux are pre-installed on it. If you remember, many years ago I also mentioned such a device to you, what if Nokia were the first to make a smartphone that was equipped with every operating system and "you" the buyer could decide what you wanted to use on your smartphone now.

The NexPhone does not represent cutting-edge technology in terms of hardware, it can be classified somewhere in the mid-range, but it is interesting not because of the hardware, but because of its software solutions: if someone connects it to a monitor, a desktop computer environment starts up. Due to dual-boot, the mobile can even run Windows 11, not only on a monitor: it also comes with a mobile interface, which is reminiscent of the late Windows Phone.

Of course, dual-boot also means that you have to select the system you want to boot when you restart, which makes it quite cumbersome to use – not to mention that the Android part, along with the mobile functions, is inaccessible in the meantime. Linux cannot be started this way, but as a program within Android 16.

"Emre Kosmaz, founder of Nex Computer, told The Verge: the Windows mobile interface will be built from progressive web applications (PWA), after Microsoft said goodbye to the tool that allowed Android apps to run within Windows in early 2025."

The point, of course, is not the mobile, but the ability to run desktop Windows 11. For now, the mobile can only be connected to the external monitor using DisplayLink, a kind of dock, but the company is already working on making a simple USB-C cable sufficient for the connection.

The NexPhone is powered by a Qualcomm QCM6490 chipset, which isn’t particularly powerful and isn’t primarily intended for such devices: it’s mostly used in IoT gadgets. The company is using this because it natively supports Android, Windows, and Linux.

The device is IP68 and IP69 rated, making it highly dust and water resistant, and it also packs a 5,000mAh battery and a 64-megapixel rear camera.

Don’t rush to any electronics store to get your hands on the phone just yet, though: Nex Computer isn’t planning to launch the device until the third quarter of 2026, at a price of $550 (GBP 403, EUR 464, INR 50,421).
