Q ualcomm has unveiled the Snapdragon Reality Elite, its new chip for smart glasses and artificial intelligence augmented reality headsets. Qualcomm is doubling down on its commitment to extended reality (XR) with a new, advanced chip that also puts its chips to work on generative AI. It’s the Snapdragon Reality Elite, a platform that works with both virtual reality and augmented reality headsets, as well as smart glasses.
The new Snapdragon Reality Elite is a much more advanced bet than what the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 has offered so far. Not only because it brings significant performance and efficiency improvements, but because it can run language and vision models directly on the device.
Qualcomm says the Snapdragon Reality Elite will debut with Project Aura technology, which is a collaboration between XREAL and Google to power XR smart glasses running Android XR. But everything indicates that we will soon see it in more devices like the Samsung Galaxy XR, which can take even better advantage of its capabilities.
Compared to the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2, the new Snapdragon Reality Elite offers up to 30% more CPU performance, while the GPU is up to 60% more powerful. This is helped by a significant increase in the capabilities of the Neural Processing Unit (NPU), which offers up to 160% more performance.
This last point is key, as it is a 48 TOPS NPU; that is, it can process 48 trillion operations per second. This way, the Snapdragon Reality Elite can run a language model with up to 3,000 million parameters in 100% local mode, without having to offload the load to mobile or PC.
Snapdragon Reality Elite, Qualcomm's new XR glasses and headset The Snapdragon Reality Elite provides enough power to run the augmented reality features required by AI without errors. For example, anything that requires interaction with assistants or agents to obtain and visualize information through Gemini and other models.
In addition, the Snapdragon Reality Elite supports screens with a resolution of up to 4.4K for each eye at 90 frames per second. In addition, the Qualcomm chip supports hardware-accelerated ray tracing and mesh shading, as well as improvements in eye and hand tracking capabilities.
If we look at the energy efficiency section, the Snapdragon Reality Elite promises up to 20% more autonomy under the same load than a Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2. But the story does not end there. The manufacturer claims that the chip generates much less heat than its predecessor, allowing it to operate at more controlled temperatures. Specifically, it is said to be able to operate at up to 12°C if necessary to run "cooler".
The Snapdragon Reality Elite is undoubtedly a very interesting bet from Qualcomm for the future of wearables with Android XR. Since the chip supports the "optical transparency" of smart glasses such as Project Aura, both video and XR headphones, we are sure to see it in a wide range of devices and brands.
