N etwork technology company Nokia is planning to cut thousands of jobs, Helsingin Sanomat reports, citing sources. Nokia aims to improve profitability as net sales growth remains slow and market competition is intense. The information provided by Helsingin Sanomat is still preliminary and subject to change. Nokia has not yet commented on the matter.
According to HS sources, the changes planned by Hotard in Nokia's organization and operating methods have caused unrest among staff. There are reportedly fears within Nokia that the new CEO will change Nokia's way of operating to a more centralized management. Under the previous CEO, Pekka Lundmark, Nokia's four business groups were able to operate completely independently and were responsible for their own results.
Last year, Nokia employed an average of 78,400 people. In Finland, Nokia employs around 6,600 people. The majority of the cuts now planned would be directed abroad. Nokia has already implemented a cost-cutting program announced in October 2023, which aims to reduce the number of employees from 86,000 at the time to 72,000-77,000 by the end of 2026, and Nokia is aiming for savings of 800-1,200 million euros, depending on the market situation.
In early 2025, approximately 3,000 additional employees were transferred to Nokia as a result of the acquisition of Infinera.
In early June, Nokia announced that Federico Guillén, head of the network infrastructure business, who is retiring, will be succeeded by David Heard, former CEO of Infinera, as of July 1. At the same time, Nokia announced that it had appointed Victoria Hanrahan, permanent secretary to the chairman and CEO, as a member of the new leadership team at Nokia.
