N okia continues to expand its patent licensing into streaming services. Vipul Mehrotra, Nokia’s vice president of new segment licensing, confirmed in a blog post on October 27 that Nokia signed an agreement with US company Starz last week to license its patents.

Perhaps the most significant deal is the agreement Nokia signed in late March to use Nokia’s video technologies in Amazon’s streaming services and devices. Nokia settled with Amazon after being sued.

"These agreements fuel a virtuous cycle of innovation: we license Nokia’s innovations and contributions to industry standards to other companies so they can benefit from our work. In return, they pay royalties for the use of our technology, which we reinvest in the development of next-generation inventions,” said Vipul Mehrotra, Nokia’s president.

Streaming services are still a relatively new area for Nokia to license patents. Nokia announced its first patent licensing agreement in this area in July 2024.

It’s not easy to reach an agreement with everyone, so Nokia has had to go to court in the case, which Nokia is currently pursuing in several countries against media company Paramount.

"We hope that Paramount will reach an agreement with us to pay for the use of our technologies on their streaming services. We are also prepared to take legal action against others who do not choose to enter into licensing agreements in a timely and fair manner," said Vipul Mehrotra, Nokia's president.

Nokia says streaming services and devices benefit from the research and development of Nokia and other innovators - without which the services and products simply would not work as consumers expect today. Nokia says its inventions have had a major impact on the development of all video codecs introduced to the market, starting with the H.264/AVC standard in the early 2000s and the H.266/VVC standard completed in 2020.

In addition, Nokia has developed and patented other interesting solutions, such as optimizing content when switching between portrait and landscape modes, and scrolling forward or backward in a video while displaying the selected moment as an image.

Licensing an extensive patent portfolio is a very important part of Nokia's current business. Nokia holds many patents for various mobile network standards, but also for standards such as Wi-Fi and video compression. In addition, Nokia holds many patents other than those related to standardized technology. Since 2000, Nokia has invested more than 150 billion euros in research and development. Patent licensing is very important for Nokia's revenues.

Nokia's technology, which includes patent licensing, has annual net sales of approximately 1.4 billion euros. In July-September, the Technologies business unit achieved net sales of 391 million euros, an increase of 11 percent compared to the same period last year. This left an operating profit of 296 million euros. According to Nokia, the increase is primarily due to revenue related to contracts signed during the quarter, related to previous periods.
