B usiness Finland has provided Nokia with €40 million for two research and development projects. The projects support Nokia’s over €100 million investment in Finland in the development of 6G technology, networking and sensor solutions for the defense sector.

Business Finland is also providing funding for two projects: Growth Finland and the expansion of the ongoing LEAD project. The total funding for the projects is €40 million. The investments will accelerate the recruitment of new experts, expand R&D activities, and deepen cooperation with the Finnish technology ecosystem.

"Nokia's role in Finnish R&D has been extremely extensive, with broad and long-term impacts. It is in Finland's interest that the expertise in domestic radio networks remains among the best in the world and enables the creation of new value based on competence in Finland. Value is created when Nokia succeeds and world-class technological expertise permeates widely into the Finnish technology ecosystem. Both Nokia projects are also closely related to security, which is of paramount importance for Finland's own defence capabilities and for the broader national security and growth business," says Lassi Noponen, Director General of Business Finland.

"Business Finland plays an important role in strengthening the Finnish innovation ecosystem. Its long-term commitment to developing 6G technology and network and sensor solutions for the defense sector is strong evidence that the common will of the entire ecosystem will strengthen Finland's technology leadership and competitiveness in the long term," says Mikko Hautala, Vice President, Geopolitics and Public Affairs at Nokia and Country Manager for Finland.

"It is great for all of Finland that Nokia is committed to significantly increasing its own and its partners' research, development and innovation (RDI) investments in Finland," says Lassi Noponen.

"Secure, reliable and high-performance networks are prerequisites for large-scale AI scaling. Finland's strong technology ecosystem and decades of network technology excellence create excellent conditions to strengthen Finland's position as a pioneer in next-generation network technologies," continues Mikko Hautala.

The Growth in Finland project focuses on the development of AI-based 6G solutions. The expansion of the LEAD locomotive project, on the other hand, focuses on the development of network and sensor solutions developed by Nokia Defense for the defense sector. The LEAD project, launched in 2024, will improve the usability, security and energy efficiency of networks, especially for the needs of industrial and other safety-critical operating environments.
