F ollowing the recent announcement of the transition to a new multi-brand portfolio strategy, HMD Global, Europe's largest smartphone manufacturer, today announces another milestone: HMD has begun production of 5G¹ smartphones in Europe. The company's first offline device, the Nokia XR21, is now available for purchase for Enterprise customers. This is in line with the overall growth potential of smartphones in Europe, with Canalys forecasting the European smartphone market to grow by 7% in 2024.

“We are delighted to be manufacturing the Nokia XR21, our signature rugged 5G smartphone, in Europe. We are committed to investing in security, technology and manufacturing processes that make our devices safer and last longer," said Jean-Francois Baril, co-founder and CEO of HMD Global.

"Our future plans include further investment in software security, with the intention of offering customized software and security features directly to customers."

Responding to the evolving needs of Enterprise customers, HMD has developed capabilities and processes to bring device manufacturing to Europe. All devices undergo rigorous software and malware testing in Europe, and some Enterprise customers request additional security by working with a number of IT security partners. Data is securely stored in the EU: With a focus on software security and built-in data protection, consumer and corporate data from all smartphones manufactured by HMD have been stored and processed on HMD servers in Finland since 2019.

In addition to its safety features, the XR21 is built to last and is designed with sustainability in mind. With military-grade durability certification³ and an IP69K rating, this smartphone is certified to withstand dust, heat, shock and water. As part of HMD's commitment to sustainability, the Nokia XR21 is designed to minimize environmental impact: The housing is made from 100% recycled aluminum and the two-day battery life⁴ supports 60% more charges over its lifetime. Additional stages in the European manufacturing process contribute to further reducing emissions.

To celebrate the Nokia XR21's new manufacturing provenance and safety standards, a limited edition 30² roll off the European production line will be available for purchase at nokia.com. The limited edition Made in Europe devices have an exclusive Frosted Platinum color, are engraved with their own unique serial number, and come with a certificate of origin in the box.
