HMD Global has made its recently introduced Nokia 123 Shield mobile phone available in three new countries at an extremely cheap price, which can be purchased in Hungary for only 18185 HUF (GBP 42, EUR 50, USD 57 and INR 5538) and in Romania for 250 RON (GBP 40, EUR 47, USD 55 and INR 5281) at the Emag retailer. This is of course not just another smartphone. According to HMD, the Nokia 123 Shield does exactly what mobile phones were originally designed to do: connect people. Despite the device's simple design, it has some thoughtful solutions. For example, the non-slip texture on the side cover provides a more secure grip, so the phone is less likely to slip out of your hand.
The rugged design is also one of the device's main strengths. According to HMD, the phone is more resistant to water, dust and sand than traditional push-button models. A rubber cover protects the charging and headphone jacks from dirt and moisture, hence the name "Shield".
However, the device is still a mobile phone that uses 2G networks. According to the manufacturer, the Nokia 123 Shield offers stronger and more stable reception than traditional 2G devices, but this technology is increasingly unavailable in many countries around the world. This is a significant difference compared to today's smartphones, which often struggle to last a day without charging even with intensive use.
On the positive side, the device now uses a USB-C connector for charging, finally saying goodbye to the old Micro-USB standard that can still be found on some cheaper traditional mobile phones. Since most electronic devices can be charged with a USB-C cable these days, this change also makes everyday use more convenient.
HMD has also integrated some practical extras into the phone. The device Its LED flashlight, according to the manufacturer, provides up to three times more light than the previous Nokia 110 model, so it can be a useful help in case of a power outage or dark environment. In addition, the 3.5 mm headphone jack, which is now being abandoned by more and more smartphones, has been retained. It is not designed for those who run applications, browse social networks or are looking for a new device for mobile photography. Rather, it can be an alternative for those who want a reliable secondary phone with long battery life, a physical keyboard and minimal distractions.
At the same time, the device is also a reminder that there is still a demand for simplicity in the mobile phone market. While artificial intelligence and bendable displays dominate the technology news, for many users what matters most is that the phone can work for days or even weeks on a single charge and can be used reliably in all conditions.
