New HMD Asha 305 Spotted in SAR Database Ahead of Release

F innish HMD Global may be reviving one of Nokia's oldest and most nostalgic phone brands. HMD's upcoming device has been revealed as the HMD Asha 305 based on SAR data, along with the device's model number, TA-1779. Based on the information, this would be an HMD-branded Asha phone, rather than a new product released directly under the Nokia brand. The result is interesting, as the Asha name is particularly known for Nokia's affordable touchscreen phones from the early 2010s.
The Nokia Asha 305 was originally released in 2012 and was an affordable Series 40-based touchscreen with a 3-inch resistive touchscreen, a 2MP camera, and dual-SIM support, among other features. However, the new HMD Asha 305 doesn't seem to be just a reissue of the old model, as the highest SAR data was recorded on the LTE B7 frequency, suggesting that this is a device that supports 4G connectivity.
The TA-1779 model code has also been spotted in other sources. The Eurasian Economic Union registry lists a device from HMD Global Oy with the model code TA-1779, and the same model code is also listed in the Optus database change log as HMD TA-1779. However, HMD has not officially announced the Asha 305 yet, and there is no product page for the model on the company's website. Therefore, the exact specifications, appearance, operating system, price and availability of the device remain a mystery. A possible return of the Asha name would not be entirely surprising, as HMD Global already acquired the Asha trademark in 2018. At the time, there was already speculation that HMD might one day bring the Asha name back to its budget phones.
The timing would also be interesting, as HMD has been trying to create a new kind of in-between category between traditional phones and smartphones lately. For example, the company launched the HMD Touch 4G, which HMD describes as a compact hybrid phone. The device features a touchscreen, Wi-Fi support, Express Chat communication, and cloud-based services.
The HMD Touch 4G's specs could give us an idea of what class the Asha 305 could fit into. The Touch 4G offers a 3.2-inch touchscreen, 4G LTE Cat 4 connectivity, RTOS Touch operating system, Unisoc T127 SoC, 64MB of RAM, 128MB of internal storage, and a 1,950mAh battery.
The most likely interpretation at the moment is that the HMD Asha 305 could be a next-generation touchscreen 4G feature phone or hybrid phone. The Asha name fits well for such a product, as the original Nokia Asha phones were positioned between traditional feature phones and smartphones.
