N okia and MEGA (Megacable) have tested long-distance optical transmission with speeds of up to 600 Gigabit/s (Gbps) using the new generation Nokia PSE-V chipset. In a statement announced by Nokia, it was explained that this technology will triple MEGA's network capacity with the installed infrastructure, reaching 600 Gbps this year and ready to reach 2.4 terabit /s (Tbps) by 2024 in the new generation using chips. The Finnish company said its solution will enable MEGA to rapidly expand its network capacity and increase its long-distance data transfer rate from 9.6 Tb to 28.8 Tb in the first phase and up to 38.4 Tb in the in the second stage.
He added that this capacity will connect MEGA's data centers in Mexico to provide the best fiber optic connection for residential and business users.
He also explained that the solutions will enable service providers to deliver the high-speed, low-latency ultra-broadband connectivity critical to future education, healthcare, business and entertainment services, while reducing network power consumption and operating costs per bit.
“We are working in partnership with Nokia, enabling our Ruta Nacional transport network to achieve higher speeds and introduce new services. We have successfully conducted 500 Gbps and 600 Gbps Ethernet transmission tests and expect to reach 800 Gbps in the future," said Miguel Sol, MEGA's Chief Technology Officer.
For his part, Raúl Romero, director of Nokia in Mexico, noted that network operators who want to keep up with today's data growth must ensure that their transport networks can scale efficiently according to demand.
MEGA is present in 31 states and more than 400 municipalities, including the country's largest cities such as Guadalajara, Puebla, Toluca, León, Veracruz, Hermosillo, Culiacán, Morelia, Querétaro and Torreón. At the end of 2022, it had 4.1 million broadband Internet, 3.6 million cable TV and 3.4 million telephone service subscribers, supported by a 67.1 thousand kilometer network that passes through 11.5 million homes.
