HMD Secure, Qualcomm and Streamwide Bring Non-Mobile Communications to Authorities and Critical Infrastructure Operators with NR Sidelink Technology

HMD Secure, Qualcomm and Streamwide have announced a collaboration to bring device-to-device communications based on 3GPP NR sidelink technology to authorities and critical infrastructure operators in situations where regular network connectivity is not available.
The proof of concept for the solution is taking place at Critical Communications World. The collaboration focuses on NR Sidelink, which enables direct device-to-device communication without the need for a traditional mobile network. Two devices connect directly to each other, and three or more devices can form a sustainable mesh network. With the multi-repeater function, the connection can be passed from one device to another, extending the coverage area over several kilometers.
The technology supports multiple 3GPP frequency choices, making it easier to meet the needs of different countries and organizations. The solution supports priority and history functions for emergency traffic. This means that critical communications can be prioritized over other traffic.
This allows users to continue push-to-talk voice communications, messaging, file sharing and phone calls even when the mobile network is absent, congested, blocked or otherwise completely unavailable. The solution is particularly aimed at situations where loss of connectivity could jeopardize operations, such as rescue operations, major accidents, natural disasters and critical infrastructure disruptions.
The technical unit combines three areas. Qualcomm introduces NR sidelink technology and a chip platform. HMD Secure offers endpoints such as the Ivalo XE as well as terminals connected to future Fusion-compatible modules. Streamwide is responsible for the application layer, which includes push-to-talk communication, messaging and file sharing.
“Off-grid sustainability is no longer a nice-to-have, it’s a necessity. By combining Qualcomm Technologies’ NR Sidelink with robust HMD terminals and proven, mission-critical applications, we’re giving teams a simple way to keep talking, sharing, and coordinating when it matters most,” said Naufel Dekli, portfolio director at HMD Secre.
HMD Secure is a subsidiary of Finnish company HMD Global, focused on secure smartphones, service platforms, and accessories for mission-critical businesses, as well as the needs of defense personnel, law enforcement, first responders, and critical infrastructure administrators.

By enabling direct and redundant communication between devices, we can provide emergency and post-disaster units with the resources they need in the most critical moments," said Dino Flore, Qualcomm's European Technology Excellence Leader.
HMD Secure said it is already in contact with several potential customers for 2-3 of the three test platforms. Early access is underway with select enterprise and critical communications customers. On the hardware side, HMD Secure is introducing tactical modules that are compatible with select current and future terminals.
