F innish company HMD Global has introduced a new affordable smartphone in Nigeria, which goes by the name HMD Luma. It is a novelty that stands out from its competitors above all with a cheerful color selection and a personal design of the camera. The HMD Luma is a 4G phone built around the Unisoc T615 (12nm processor). It is not designed for heavy gaming or demanding tasks, and HMD does not position it that way. The Luma is clearly designed for everyday tasks: messaging, social media, streaming, navigation, maybe some light multitasking.
Memory is fixed at 4GB of RAM, with 128GB or 256GB of storage. The display size is 6.67 inches, uses an HD+ LCD panel (720 x 1604). On paper, that resolution might not sound impressive at this size, but HMD has paired it with a 120Hz refresh rate, which is a noticeable improvement over the 90Hz of previous budget models. Scrolling and general navigation should feel smooth. Peak brightness is set at around 500 nits, which should handle outdoor viewing relatively well in most conditions.
The camera hardware is simple. There’s a 50MP main sensor on the back, and an 8MP front camera for selfies and video calls. As with most phones in this sector, real-world performance is more about image processing than megapixel count. Still, a 50MP sensor gives HMD the ability to deliver decent detail in good lighting.
The 5,000mAh battery is pretty basic for 2026, but combined with a modest chipset and HD+ display, it offers reliable endurance. Charging is limited to 18W over USB-C 2.0 — which isn’t particularly fast by 2026 standards, but acceptable for a budget device.
A few minor extras stand out more than the main specs. The 3.5mm headphone jack remains. It may seem like a small detail, but it saves buyers from having to buy expensive Bluetooth earbuds — which is important at this price point. Stereo speakers are also available, as well as Bluetooth 5.0 and dual-SIM 4G connectivity. None of these seem like much on paper, yet together they reinforce the phone’s “keep it simple” positioning.

The Luma comes in titanium and blue finishes, weighs around 198 grams, and is 8.65mm thick. It ships with Android 15 out of the box, although details on long-term software support have yet to be announced.
For now, the device has been listed on HMD’s regional websites in Nigeria and Ghana with the “coming soon” tag. "arrives". Prices have not yet been announced, but based on the hardware, it is clearly aimed at the entry-level and mid-budget category.
