HMD Global Launches New Key Smartphone in European Markets, Australia and New Zealand

W elcoming the new year 2025, HMD Global today launched a new entry-level smartphone, the Key. It features a 6.52-inch, 576x1,280 60Hz LCD touchscreen with 460 nits peak brightness, Unisoc 9832E chipset, 2GB RAM, 32GB expandable storage, and a 4,000mAh battery with 10W wired charging support.
HMD recently unveiled its new smartphone in select regions. The company’s latest device is the HMD Key, which runs Android 14 (Go Edition) and comes with entry-level specifications to match the budget price tag. So, as bare bones as they come, they actually run Android 14 Go, presumably because pairing regular Android with 2GB of RAM would be even more disastrous. They promised that you’d get quarterly security updates for two years and nothing else.
Commenting on the launch of HMD Key, Lars Silberbauer, Global Chief Marketing Officer at Human Mobile Devices (HMD), said: “Smartphones don’t have to be expensive to be smart and the HMD Key makes sure users get what they expect from their smartphone whilst catering to those on a budget. It’s got all the essential photography modes plus performance-boosting virtual memory, and the smooth Android experience.”
The phone has a single speaker, an 8MP rear camera, a 5MP front camera, Bluetooth 4.2, a 3.5mm headphone jack, a USB Type-C port, and is IP52 dust and splash resistant. It will be available in Midnight Black and Ice Blue. It measures 166.4 x 76.9 x 8.95mm and weighs 185.4g.

A 4,000mAh battery powers this device, which supports standard 10W charging. This model runs on Android 14 Go Edition, which is a lighter version of the regular Android operating system. For photography, it packs an 8MP rear camera with autofocus and LED flash, while the front-facing 5MP shooter is for selfies and video calls. You get access to Portrait, Night, and Pro modes, Slow-mo, and more. Other notable features include face unlock, a 3.5mm audio jack, FM radio, and Dual SIM support.
