HMD Fusion coming soon with detachable accessories

P reviously, HMD Global, the company behind Nokia-branded smartphones, unveiled a concept called the Fusion at MWC2024, where details were unfortunately scarce, but it looks like the Fusion will return to the modular phone concept, with a base unit and connectable "smart clothes" that expand the phone functionality.

The idea isn't entirely new, as Motorola's Moto Mods offered a similar approach in 2016, and the concept goes back even further to Jolla's phone in 2014. While these experiments have not gained significant traction, HMD is hoping for a different outcome.

The Fusion is expected to boast a large 6.6-inch 1080p IPS display with a 120Hz refresh rate. Under the hood, the device packs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G variant (QCM6490), likely paired with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. The camera system is rumored to include a high-resolution 108MP main sensor, a 2MP secondary sensor and a 16MP front-facing camera.

Jean-Francois Baril, Co-Founder and President and CEO of HMD Global Oy, said today: With just a few days to go before IFA 2024 in Berlin, all of us at Human Mobile Devices (HMD) are so excited to share with you that not only we are design disruptors, but also innovators of a new era of better designed technology.

From the "Better Phone" project to fun phones and repairables that you can refurbish and transform with clothes. Stay tuned for more to come.

A 4,800mAh battery with 30W fast charging support powers this upcoming smartphone. It is also said to have WiFi 6E and a 3.5mm audio jack. All that being said, what really sets the Fusion apart is the inclusion of pogo pins for modular accessories, dubbed "smart clothes." These magnetic accessories hint at similar functionality to Apple's MagSafe, potentially adding features like a third rear camera, wireless charging, or even a gamepad accessory.

Earlier leaks also mention that the device has a recycled aluminum and plastic construction measuring 164mm x 76mm x 8.6mm while weighing 200 grams. The leak does not include details on the expected launch date or pricing of the HMD Fusion.

HMD Fusion isn't a new concept, but an interesting one, but its future depends on addressing the flaws of modular phones in the past. With a well-designed base phone, a robust developer community, and handy smart gear, Fusion can revolutionize phone customization. However, without careful planning and execution, there is a risk that it will become another forgotten footnote in the history of the smartphone, as we have experienced in the case of several Nokia devices in the past.
