H uman Mobile Devices (HMD) has announced the immediate availability of the HMD Fusion X1, a new smartphone developed in collaboration with children's smartwatch leader Xplora.

Although the HMD Fusion X1 smartphone launched today is not available in even half of the countries announced by HMD Global in its official announcement (Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, the UK, Denmark, Norway, Poland and Sweden), there is also a slight difference in its pricing. According to the official announcement, it is priced at 269 euros, while the device can currently be purchased online for 279 euros. Let's face it, in this "format" it looks pretty awful...waiting for release in March.

The launch comes amid growing concerns about children's online safety. Recent research from HMD and Perspectus Global found that more than half of children are regularly contacted by strangers online, and nearly 40% are exposed to harmful content. The Fusion X1 is HMD's direct response to these findings, and was created in collaboration with thousands of parents and experts as part of "The Better Phone Project."

HMD claims that unlike traditional smartphones, the Fusion X1 is built from the ground up with deeply integrated parental controls through its Xplora technology. Parents can manage access to social media and the browser, restrict calls and messaging to trusted contacts, use GPS tracking with up to 10 safety zones, and activate "Stay Focus Mode" to limit distractions.

Crucially, the device launches with zero apps, giving parents complete control over what is added and when, a stark contrast to more advanced, open-access devices. Full parental controls are available with an Xplora Guardian subscription, starting at €4.99 (GBP 4.20, USD 5.70, INR 489.30) per month. HMD also plans to integrate its SafeToNet AI-driven protection on the device later this year to automatically block harmful content.

The security-focused Fusion X1 continues to offer features that will appeal to teens, HMD says. It boasts a powerful camera with slow-motion selfies and gesture control, a sleek design and unique "Smart Outfits" - customizable snap-on cases that add features like an LED light ring (Flashy Outfit), gaming controllers (Gaming Outfit) or extra battery power (Charging Outfit).

Its repairable design, which allows for easy replacement of the home screen or battery, also encourages tech literacy and ownership, HMD believes.
