E lisa, Nokia, and the Finnish company Scailarc have introduced a new type of calling technology designed to make calls from unknown numbers more useful and trustworthy. According to the companies, this marks the world's first demonstration of a call where the recipient does not even need to answer to handle the matter.

During a demonstration call in Helsinki, artist Robin Packalen could see that Topi Manner from Elisa was calling him before he even answered. At the same time, information appeared on the phone screen indicating that the purpose of the call was to schedule an appointment for the installation of a fiber-optic connection.

Packalen did not answer the call, yet he was able to select a suitable installation time directly from the phone screen. The call was executed using technology developed by Scailarc and a phone from the Finnish company Jolla. The system utilizes the IMS Data Channel standard, which holds promise for phones from various manufacturers in the near future.

The solution aims to address the trend of consumers answering calls from unknown numbers less frequently than in the past. According to Elisa, 41 percent of Finns answer calls from unknown numbers less often than before, and 17 percent do not answer them at all.

"The fundamental logic of a phone call has remained unchanged for decades: someone calls, and another person answers. However, the challenge is no longer technical but human, as an increasing number of people are reluctant to answer calls from unknown numbers. The solution unveiled today takes the calling experience to the next level and continues the development of Elisa’s 'Who Calls' service. The call goes beyond merely identifying the caller; it provides information on the purpose of the contact and enables the matter to be handled seamlessly—even without the call itself. This makes the call smarter, more efficient, and more useful for the user," says Laura Pitkänen, Business Director for Corporate Customers at Elisa.

The new solution takes the concept further than Elisa’s current "Who's Calling" service, which already displays the name of the company or organization on the phone screen before the call is answered.

"Phone calls remain one of the most effective ways to reach people. When a call is combined with a trusted context and simple interactive service options, it becomes an even more useful way to handle situations where the customer needs to identify the caller and respond quickly," says Marko Rapeli, CEO of Scailarc."

The IMS data channel enables the display of additional information and simple interactive features associated with the call. Users do not need to install a separate app; they simply need a phone that supports the technology.

According to Marko Rapel, CEO of Scailarc, this allows the call itself to be developed into a more versatile service channel.

"Nokia is also involved in developing the network technology for the solution. Shkumbin Hamiti, Head of Network Monetization Platform at Nokia, highlights the programmable capabilities of networks, which can bring real-time information and new services into the calling experience."

Companies envision applications for this technology in sectors such as healthcare, banking, logistics, and official communications, where reaching the customer and reliably identifying the caller are crucial.

Elisa, Nokia, and Scailarc are continuing to develop the technology with the aim of achieving initial commercial deployments. A detailed timeline for the broader rollout of these services has not yet been announced.
