B ittium, a leading provider of battle-ready tactical communications networks based on software-defined radio technology, and Nokia, a technology innovator delivering secure, reliable and resilient networks for defence communications, have recently combined their solutions to create a hybrid tactical communications network. The companies demonstrated their joint solutions to the Finnish Defence Forces. The hybrid network will enable the integration of Nokia’s military-grade 4G/5G bubbles into the tactical data network and cooperation with other authorities using 4G/5G networks.

The demonstration demonstrated the interoperability of Bittium and Nokia’s solutions as a tactical hybrid network, in which Bittium’s decentralized, server-independent tactical communications network plays a key role. During the demonstration, the hybrid network was used for various purposes, including enabling voice across the entire network regardless of the end device, using situational awareness applications, and transmitting video over the network.

"Our high-performance and resilient data transmission system provides an excellent interface for other communication solutions. The demonstration, conducted in cooperation with Nokia, demonstrated the integration of Nokia's 4G/5G network technology with Bittium's tactical communication system. 4G/5G solutions complement tactical communication networks, and the hybrid network formed from them expands the network used for operational control," said Tommi Kangas, Executive Vice President, Defense & Security Business Segment, Bittium.

Giuseppe Targia, President of Nokia’s Space and Defense Division, said: “This interoperability breakthrough revolutionizes mission-critical operations by seamlessly combining Bittium’s tactical communications solutions with our military-grade 4G/5G technology. By providing secure and battle-ready connectivity and high data rates, we deliver real-time data and increased operational agility even in the most challenging environments.”

The solution demonstrated consisted of the Bittium Tactical Wireless IP Network™ (TAC WIN) system and Bittium Tough SDR™ vehicle and military radios, which networked via the Bittium TAC WIN waveform™ and connected mobile 4G/5G users to the hybrid network. The 4G/5G bubbles were formed using a Nokia vehicle-mounted Banshee Mobile Radio (BMR) base station and a Banshee Tactical Radio (BTR) base station carried in the soldier’s backpack. BMR and BTR provided network connectivity for smartphones using the location-aware application, including Bittium Tough Mobile™ 2. Bittium Tough VoIP Service™ enabled voice service across the entire hybrid network.
