B razilian port operator Brasil Terminal Portuario (BTP) has partnered with TIM and Nokia to build and operate its private 5G network, which it says will drive the digital transformation of its Santos container terminal operations.

According to BTP, the partnership will implement the first private 5G network in this sector on the Latin American continent. The project should develop into a final structure after Anatel releases the 3.5 GHz frequencies for the city by 2023.

The 5G network enables BTP to implement systems that increase equipment connectivity and, consequently, operational efficiency. Nokia is contributing to the project with the Nokia Digital Automation Cloud (NDAC) platform.

The partnership provides for the deployment of the industry's first private 5G network on the Latin American continent and will become a final structure after regulator Anatel releases the 3.5 GHz band planned for 2023 for the city of Santos. The dedicated network will be deployed using spectrum owned by the Brazilian mobile operator TIM, while the network equipment and solutions will be provided by Finland's Nokia.

One of the main goals of BTP with the network is to enable the connectivity of equipment and the implementation of solutions that increase operational efficiency.

BTP CEO Ricardo Arten said: “We want to increase our operational capacity within the current limitations of the terminal and technology is key to this process. We believe that technology can make the port sector more efficient, safer and more sustainable. We are constantly investing in the development of new digital tools and technologies in order to offer our customers the best solutions".

The technology is expected to enable remote and real-time monitoring of equipment, such as cranes of various sizes, and plant activities controlled from a monitoring center. BTP is also looking to improve communication between the terminal's more than 1,400 employees, including through its own tools and applications. Tests involving the first access network and private core measuring speed, coverage and latency were positive and met the goals and specifications set by BTP's technical teams.
