F RANKFURT, Feb 7 - Amazon, opens a new tab Video streaming services in Germany were thrown into doubt on Friday when a German court ruled that the U.S. technology giant infringed a patent held by Finnish network equipment maker Nokia, opens a new tab.
The Düsseldorf Regional Court ruled on Friday that Amazon.com Inc. had infringed a patent owned by Nokia Corp. The court ruled that Amazon must stop using the patent, which applies to streaming services.
Nokia welcomed the court's decision, saying it meant its patent covered streaming features such as Amazon Prime Video "which are now subject to a ban in Germany."
"... the innovation ecosystem will collapse if patent owners are not fairly compensated for the use of their technologies, as it will become much more difficult for innovators to finance the development of next-generation technologies,"Arvin Patel, Nokia's director of licensing for new segments, said in an emailed statement to Reuters.
Last September, a regional court in Munich ruled in Nokia's favor, saying that Amazon's Fire TV streaming devices infringed Nokia's patents. Amazon said at the time that it disagreed with the Munich court's ruling and expected the situation to be resolved soon, without giving specifics. Amazon said it had worked with a number of companies to license its video patents.
