N ow, giving your kids a phone might not seem like the best idea. Exposing them to strangers online, on social media and in other unpleasant parts of the web sounds like a recipe for disaster. But that's what the XploraOne kids' phone is trying to avoid.

Xplora, a Nordic company specialising in children's technology, has unveiled a new phone, the XploraOne, that deliberately breaks the mold of current smartphones. It's a mobile phone designed for children, with no internet connectivity, social media or app store. The device has been developed in partnership with Finnish company HMD Global.

The launch comes at a time when children's smartphone use and the effects of social media are being widely debated in Europe. A Nordic study found that six out of ten children aged 8 to 12 have encountered unpleasant situations online, and more than half have been approached by strangers. Almost 40 percent of children feel they use their phones too much.

The problem isn’t the kids, but the technology they’re given. She says kids shouldn’t have to adapt to devices designed for adults, but technology should adapt to the needs of kids.

The XploraOne is designed specifically for kids ages 9 to 12 as their first phone. It only allows calls and messages to pre-approved contacts, and guardians manage all access through a separate Xplora app. The lack of internet and social media automatically limits usage, and your child can’t install games or apps from outside the device.

Security is also at the heart of the project on a practical level. The phone has GPS tracking, a school mode to minimize distractions, and the ability to limit usage, such as during school days or nights. Parents have a clear view of what can be done with the device, and the use of the device is not just a matter of guesswork.

Xplora emphasizes that it is not a fun device, but a communication tool. According to the company, the XploraOne works best when it is not in the child’s hands, but with them, creating safety and connection in everyday life. The idea is to give the child the right amount of freedom, without exposing them to digital risks from too many smartphones early on.

The device is part of Xplora’s broader strategy of gradually introducing technology into children’s lives. The youngest members of the family will receive smartwatches, primary school children will receive an XploraOne phone, and later more advanced solutions when the child is ready.

The XploraOne is available now in the UK for £149 (EUR 172, USD 204, INR 18,420) at full price or for a two-year subscription for £9.99 (EUR 11, USD 13, INR 1224) in just one "Black" colour by clicking the link below! The Xplora is currently available for purchase online in Spain, Norway, Denmark, Finland, the US, the UK, Germany, Sweden, France, Poland and in selected retail stores.
